AI4STEM leverages Artificial Intelligence to enhance STEM education in Tanzanian primary schools. The project focuses on developing intelligent tutoring systems, AI-powered teaching aids, and inclusive learning technologies to improve subject understanding and educational equity.

Project Overview

AI4STEM is a five-year research and innovation initiative aimed at transforming STEM education in Tanzanian primary schools through the strategic application of Artificial Intelligence technologies. The project responds to persistent systemic challenges including overcrowded classrooms, limited individualized learning support, inadequate teaching resources, and consistently low performance in mathematics and science subjects. These challenges are particularly pronounced in rural and underserved communities where access to innovative learning tools remains limited. AI4STEM focuses on developing AI-powered Intelligent Tutoring Systems, adaptive teaching aids, and inclusive educational technologies designed to personalize learning, improve comprehension, and enhance engagement. Special emphasis is placed on equitable access to quality STEM education, including the integration of assistive technologies to support learners with disabilities and marginalized groups.

Key Objectives

The primary objective of AI4STEM is to enhance STEM teaching and learning outcomes through scalable AI-driven solutions. The project seeks to design, develop, and pilot Intelligent Tutoring Systems that provide adaptive learning pathways tailored to individual learners’ needs. It also aims to develop AI-generated teaching aids that support teachers in lesson delivery and content illustration. Furthermore, the project strengthens institutional research capacity in Artificial Intelligence and educational technologies at Mzumbe University while fostering interdisciplinary collaboration across education, computer science, and policy domains.

Expected Impact

The project is expected to significantly improve learners’ performance, engagement, and confidence in STEM subjects. By introducing adaptive and inclusive learning technologies, AI4STEM aims to reduce disparities in access to quality education, particularly for underserved populations. In the long term, the project contributes to strengthening Tanzania’s STEM foundation, enhancing national competitiveness, and positioning Mzumbe University as a leader in AI-driven educational innovation.

AI4STEM operates through a multi-stakeholder partnership involving Mzumbe University, Ghent University (Belgium), the Ministry of Education, Science and Technology, the President’s Office – Regional Administration and Local Government (PO-RALG), as well as primary school teachers and pupils across selected regions. These stakeholders are actively engaged in project design, piloting, evaluation, and sustainability planning to ensure alignment with national education priorities and long-term adoption of AI-enhanced learning systems.
